Teams Error: "To open the web app, you need to change your browser settings to allow third-party cookies."

Issue:

I cannot access Teams. I am getting a message that says, "To open the web app, you need to change your browser settings to allow third-party cookies." How do I do that?

You can enable third party cookies in your web browser, or install the Teams app on your computer.

To install Teams on your Computer:

  1. Log into your Microsoft account at portal.office.com using your College credentials.
  2. From the available apps, choose Teams.
  3. Once Teams is open, in the lower right corner, click the "Download desktop app" icon
  4. Save and run the Teams_windows_x64.exe file
  5. Once installed, open Teams from your computer and sign in with your College of Charleston credentials

How to enable third-party cookies in your browser depends on which web browser you are using. See Below for more.

Google Chrome

You can block or allow all cookies by default. You can also allow cookies from a specific site, while blocking third-party cookies in ads or images on that webpage. 

  1. On your computer, open Chrome.
  2. At the top right, click More More and then Settings.
  3. Under "Privacy and security," click Cookies and other site data.
  4. Select an option:
    • “Allow all cookies”
    • "Block all cookies (not recommended)”.
    • "Block third party cookies in Incognito"
    • "Block third-party cookies." 

Important: If you block third-party cookies, all cookies and site data from other sites will be blocked, even if the site is allowed on your exceptions list.

Firefox

  1. If you’re using Windows, in the Firefox window, select Open menu Firefox browser options menu > Options.

    • Tip:  If you’re using a Mac, go to Firefox > Preferences.
  2. Select the Privacy tab.

  3. In the History section under Firefox will, select Use custom settings for history.

  4. Make sure Accept cookies from sites is checked and Accept third party cookies is set to Always, and then select OK.

 

Internet Explorer

  • In Internet Explorer, in the menu bar, select Tools Tools button in Internet Explorer, upper right corner > Internet options > Privacy > Advanced.

  • Select Accept or Prompt under First-party Cookies, and Accept or Prompt under Third-party Cookies.

  • Select OK.

Edge

  1. Click More located on the top-right corner and select Settings.
  2. Scroll down and click View advanced settings.
  3. Under Cookies, choose Don't block cookies.
  4. Restart your browser. 

 

Safari

  1. Go to Safari > Preferences, and then Privacy.
  2. Under "Block cookies" select never.
  3. It is recommended to change it back to always once you are done with the site for increased security.
