Issue:
When I boot my computer I just get a black screen that says "System halted! Attention: Unsupported video configuration detected."
Audience:
Faculty
Staff
Environment:
Dell
Desktop
Cause:
This error occurs because the computer has a dedicated video card, but the monitor is plugged into the built-in video port instead. It can also occur when the user has more than 1 monitor, each plugged into a different source (one in the video card, and one in the on-board port). If the monitor(s) are already plugged into the video card, then it is likely an incorrect video setting in the BIOS causing the error.
Resolution:
- Power down the computer.
- Ensure that all video cables are connected to the dedicated video card outputs as shown below. (Optiplex 7020 pictured)
- Power computer back on and check if error persists.
- If the error is still present, some settings within the BIOS need to be checked. Most computers on campus have a password-protected BIOS, so a field technician will need to assist further in-person.
