Unsupported Video Configuration

Issue:

When I boot my computer I just get a black screen that says "System halted! Attention: Unsupported video configuration detected."

Audience:

Faculty

Staff

Environment:

Dell

Desktop

Cause:

This error occurs because the computer has a dedicated video card, but the monitor is plugged into the built-in video port instead. It can also occur when the user has more than 1 monitor, each plugged into a different source (one in the video card, and one in the on-board port). If the monitor(s) are already plugged into the video card, then it is likely an incorrect video setting in the BIOS causing the error.

Resolution:

  1. Power down the computer.
  2. Ensure that all video cables are connected to the dedicated video card outputs as shown below. (Optiplex 7020 pictured)
  3. Power computer back on and check if error persists.
  4. If the error is still present, some settings within the BIOS need to be checked. Most computers on campus have a password-protected BIOS, so a field technician will need to assist further in-person.
