Adding Network Printers on Windows

Issue:

Printer is not responding

Documents fail to reach the printer

Environment:

Windows 10

Network Printer

Resolution:

Method 1:

First, please note that you must be connected to the CofC network in order to add or print to a network printer.

The most commonly used print servers are:

\\poplar2  or  \\poplar

  1. Use one of the following methods to display the available printers on the print servers:
    • Press the Windows key and the R key to open a Run Dialogue box. Enter the server name to which you wish to connect, as written above, and press the Enter key.
    • Click the Start button, and in the Search programs and files searchbox, enter the server name to which you wish to connect, as written above, and press the Enter key.
    • Open the Internet Explorer web browser, and in the web address field, enter the server name to which you wish to connect, as written above, and press the Enter key.
  2. A new window will open, listing all the printers on the print server. If you receive an error, try again making sure you have entered back slashes (\), not forward slashes (/), and that you spelled the name correctly.
  3. The printer name begins with the departmental abbreviation, followed by a hypen (-) and the printer model. Most printers will confirm the location for you if you hover your mouse over the name of the printer. Locate the printer you would like to use and double-click on it. This will install the drivers for you. You only need to perform this action once, not every time you want to print to it.
  4. Once the print drivers are installed, you will see the printer listed in your Printers & Scanners. If you would like to make it the default printer:
    • Click on the printer in the Printers & Scanners window and choose Manage
    • Choose Set as default

Method 2:

You can also connect to it by IP address or host name. If you are not sure of the IP address or hostname, print a test page from the printer to get this information.

  1. In Search, type and choose Printers & Scanners
  2. Choose + Add printer or scanner
  3. Scroll to the bottom of the printers and scanners list and click The printer that I want isn't listed
  4. Choose Add a printer using a TCP/IP address or hostname
  5. Enter the IP address or hostname into the Hostname or IP address field.
  6. Leave other fields as default, and click Next
  7. Once the printer is found, it will finish installation and give you an option to set as default and print a test page before closing the wizard.
  8. Once done, click Finish to close the window.
