Add a Printer to your Personal Computer

Issue:

How do I connect to a network printer from my personal computer?

I need to print from my personal device/laptop/macbook.

Environment:

Must be connected to the CofC network (Ethernet or Eduroam)

Must know the printer name or IP address

Cause:

Some employees are not provided with a college-owned computer and must use their own.

Resolution:

Windows 10

  1. Connect to the CofC network via Ethernet or Eduroam wireless.
  2. Search for and choose Printers and Scanners
  3. Click the + next to Add a printer or scanner
  4. Scroll down below the list of printers and choose the link that says, The printer that I want isn't listed
  5. In the Add Printer window, choose “Add a printer using a TCP/IP address or hostname” option and click Next
  6. The Device type can be set to AutoDetect.
  7. Type in Hostname (ex: IT-Dell3670), or IP address (ex: 153.9.220.139). The Port name should be the same as the hostname. Click Next.
  8. The checkbox for "Query the printer and automatically select the driver to use" may be checked.
  9. You may need to choose the printer driver. If prompted with the Install the printer driver window, choose the manufacturer of the printer on the left, and the printer model on the right. Then click Next.
  10. If desired, change the printer name and click Next.
  11. Click Next on the printer sharing page.
  12. If desired, check the checkbox to set it as default. Click Finish to complete the installation.

 

Windows 7

  1. Connect to the CofC network via Ethernet or wireless.
  2. Click Start.
  3. Select Devices & Printers
  4. Select Add Printer (or Right-click in the printers and faxes area and select Add Printer)
  5. Select “Add a Network, Wireless or Bluetooth Printer
  6. The machine should search and pull a list of network printers, if the needed printer is not listed, select the “The printer that I want isn’t listed” option under search area
  7. Search the directory by selecting the “Add a printer using a TCP/IP address or hostname” option and click Next
  8. The Device type can be set to AutoDetect.
  9. Type in Hostname (ex: IT-Dell3670), or IP address (ex: 153.9.220.139). The Port name should be the same as the hostname. Click Next.
  10. The checkbox for "Query the printer and automatically select the driver to use" may be checked.
  11. Change the printer name, if desired, and click Next.
  12. Click Next on the printer sharing page.
  13. Check the checkbox to set it as default, if desired. Click Finish.

 

Mac

  1. First, connect to the CofC network via Ethernet or wireless.
  2. Install the Xerox Driver from the Xerox support website.
  3. Click Apple>System Preferences> Printers and Scanners
  4. Click the + to add a new printer
  5. In the Add window, click the IP tab
  6. In the Address field, enter the fully qualified domain name for the printer (add cougars.int on the end of the printer name) or enter the IP address.
  7. The protocol defaults to IPP. Change the Protocol to LPD (Line Printer Daemon).
  8. You can enter any name you want. It is suggested to name it the same as it appears on the server.
  9. The "Use" field is for the driver. Select the Xerox driver you installed in step two.
  10. Click Add.
  11. Choose Duplex printing if desired.
  12. Click OK.
