Set Up an Outlook Email Account

How do I set up my email account?

 

Environment:

Employee Exchange Account

Outlook

On Campus

 

Resolution:

Windows

Log into a campus computer with your own credentials. The first time you open Outlook on an on-campus Windows computer, the setup wizard will begin. Accept all default options. The wizard will automatically detect the correct settings, and email will open when you finish.

 

 

Mac

Account type = Exchange of Office 365

Method = User Name and Password

Username = your entire email address

Uncheck the checkbox for "Configure automatically"

Server = outlook.office365.com

 

 

Smart Phone

Droid

Your device must be protected with a passcode. The passcode should be at least 4 digits that are non-repeating and non-sequential. Some phones refer to this feature as a pin or screen lock.

Multi-factor Authentication (MFA) is enabled on CofC email accounts, so some older versions may not be compatible with MFA. Additionally, the IMAP, POP, and SMTP legacy mail protocols will soon not be supported (9/15/21). It is recommended that you set up your email account using the Outlook app.

 

Add the email using the Outlook app:
Install the Outlook app on your phone:
  1. Open the Play Store app on your Android device
  2. Search for Microsoft Outlook
  3. Tap Get and then Install to install it on your phone
  4. Once it finishes downloading, tap Open to open it
Set up the email account on the Outlook app:
  1. Open the Outlook app
  2. Type in your full CofC email address
  3. Tap the Add Account button
  4. Authenticate your account with your password and the Multi-Factor Authentication method you previously set up

 

Add the email using the native Android mail app:

Specific instructions for setting up your email on Droid devices vary, but here are the general settings you may be prompted for:

  • Account type (or protocol): Exchange (IMAP)
  • Server: outlook.office365.com
  • Domain: cougars (or cougars.int)
  • Username: enter your entire email address; some phones require entering a backslash (\) in front of the email address
  • Password: your own email password

 

iPad/iPhone

You must have a passcode set on your device in order to add your CofC email. To set the passcode —

  • Go to Settings > Passcode. The Passcode should be at least 4 digits that are non-repeating and non-sequential.

 

Add the email using the Outlook app:

  1. Open the App Store app on your iPhone
  2. Search for Microsoft Outlook
  3. Tap Get and then Install to install it on your phone
  4. Once it finishes downloading, tap Open to open it
Set up the email account on the Outlook app:
  1. Open the Outlook app
  2. Type in your full CofC email address
  3. Tap the Add Account button
  4. Authenticate your account with your password and the Multi-Factor Authentication method you previously set up
 
Add your email using the Apple Mail App:

Note: Multi-factor Authentication (MFA) is enabled on CofC email accounts, so you must have iOS11 or later for your email to connect using Apple Mail. Older versions are not compatible with MFA. Additionally, the IMAP, POP, and SMTP legacy mail protocols will soon not be supported (9/15/21). It is recommended that you set up your email account using the Outlook app instead of the Apple Mail app.

  • Go to Settings > Passwords & Accounts > Add Account > Choose the Exchange option.
  • Enter your email address and a description for the email.
  • Choose Next. When prompted, choose Sign In vs. Configure Manually.
  • Once you choose Sign In, a Microsoft login prompt will appear- select to sign in with a Work or School Account. If you are prompted for username, put in your entire email address.Your pasword is the same you use for my.cofc.edu.
  • Follow the prompts (clicking Next in the upper right corner) until you get to Save.
  • After you Save the account, you should be able to access the Mail app on your device to view your email. These instructions are also provided by Apple on their website.
