Outlook Search Not Working

Issue

The search feature in Outlook isn't working.

When I try to search for something, nothing comes up.

I can clearly see a word in the subject line of an email, but when I search for it, the search feature does not find it at all.

Cause

Possible causes include:

• Outlook is not indexed for the search function
• The index is corrupted and needs to be rebuilt
• Outlook is not updated
• Corrupt pst or ost file

Resolution

First, check for and install updates. If it is still not working, see other options below:

Check Indexing Options

1. Click File>Options>Search
2. Click Indexing Options...
3. Click Modify
4. Make sure that Outlook is selected as an Indexing option

Rebuild the Index

If the Indexing Options already include Outlook, you may needto rebuild the Index. Note: This will take a LONG time.

1. Click File>Options>Search
2. Click Indexing Options...
3. Click Advanced
4. Click Rebuild
