Why register for SSPR (Self Service Password Reset)

Issue:

Why should I register my account for the Office 365 Self Service Password Reset?

Environment:

Office 365

CofC Employee

Resolution:

Forgot Password Link Shortcomings

The "Forgot Password" link will only work under the following conditions:

  1. The account cannot be expired or disabled. If your account is locked (due to security reasons, or due to inactivity), you must contact Service Desk in order to have the account enabled before you will be able to log in again.
  2. You must remember the answers to the security questions.

Benefits of SSPR (Self Service Password Reset)

  1. If the account is locked (disabled or expired), you can still reset the password without IT intervention.
  2. You have a choice on recovery methods:  Microsoft Authentication App, alternate email address, phone
  3. You can access your account 24/7. Because you can access your account without IT assistance, you won't have to wait for business hours to get access into your account.
  4. It resets your password across all systems at the same time, and most people find it easier to reset their password using this method rather than using the MyCharleston Secret Questions and Answers.
  5. Multi Factor Authentication (MFA) is now required on all CofC Office 365 accounts. If you set up SSPR, the same methods you set up for SSPR can be used for MFA, potentially saving yourself a required step later.
