No Sound - Audio Drivers Outdated or Missing

Issue:

My computer is no longer playing sound. The volume icon has an X over it. The troubleshooter indicates that the drivers were out of date.

How do I update the drivers for sound?

Environment:

Windows 10

College-owned faculty/staff used computer

The person logged in must have administrative rights in order to install updated drivers

Cause:

Audio drivers are outdated or missing

Resolution:

1. Type Device Manager in the search box in the lower left of your start screen.
2. Navigate to the Sound, video and game controllers
3. Right-click the device for audio, and choose Update driver
4. Check under "Other devices" as well, updating any drivers related to audio
5. Restart
6. Still not working? You can also download updated drivers from the manufacturer's website.
   • For example, if the computer is a Dell, go to Dell.com and chose the option for support.
   • Enter the service tag number of the computer, and view drivers/downloads.
   • Download/install updated audio drivers, and restart.
