Issue:
My computer is no longer playing sound. The volume icon has an X over it. The troubleshooter indicates that the drivers were out of date.
How do I update the drivers for sound?
Environment:
Windows 10
College-owned faculty/staff used computer
The person logged in must have administrative rights in order to install updated drivers
Cause:
Audio drivers are outdated or missing
Resolution:
- Type Device Manager in the search box in the lower left of your start screen.
- Navigate to the Sound, video and game controllers
- Right-click the device for audio, and choose Update driver
- Check under "Other devices" as well, updating any drivers related to audio
- Restart
- Still not working? You can also download updated drivers from the manufacturer's website.
- For example, if the computer is a Dell, go to Dell.com and chose the option for support.
- Enter the service tag number of the computer, and view drivers/downloads.
- Download/install updated audio drivers, and restart.
